Korean medical team gave Myanmar’s little angel a new life.

last year, the parents of Zikri, who lives in Kuching, heard the crushing news from the hospital that their 2 months old son was suffering from Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF).
Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital anomaly that associated with a defect in pulmonary artery carrying blood from heart to lung.
though it was strange that his hands and feet were often turning blue, the parent did not even think that it was so serious, unable to treat in Kuching. Overseas surgery is inconceivable for the parents who live in farming and daily work.  When they heard that 95% of patients with TOF die before age 40, all they could do was pray by the side.
This sad story became exposed to the Korean community earlier this year.  A pediatric thoracic surgeon at SNUH, who was on volunteering service in Kuching delivered this news to SNUH to seek the way to help him in Korea. SNUH immediately went to a meeting to review the medical records from Kuching , concluded that “it is treatable” and then perform a surgery the following morning after entering the Zikri and his family. The operation surgeon who delivered the Khan’s news to SNUH. the surgery was successful and recovery was faster than expected. Zikri was transferred from the intensive care unit to the general ward just one day after the operation with fast recovery. A medical team said they initially thought he would have to stay in the hospital for two weeks, but realized he could be discharged in one week considering his remarkable progress. “Thank you very much to the Korean medical staff who gave our son a new life.” Zikri's parents extended their thank.

Seoul National University Hospital received the 'Most Innovative Healthcare Companies of 2018

The Seoul National University Hospital has received the 'Most Innovative Healthcare Companies of 2018’ from Healthcare Innovation Conference hosted by the International Medical Tourism Association (MTA) in Orlando, U.S.

'Most Innovative Healthcare Companies of 2018’ is awarded to the medical institution that leads the development of advanced health care sectors and has innovative technologies.
SNUH has been recognized for its excellence in the world's first in reaching 200 cases of pure laparoscopic living donor liver resection surgery.

This operation is a surgical method considering the donor's postoperative recovery and patient satisfaction is high. However, because of the high level of skill required, many hospitals are still performing open surgery.
This achievement was introduced to the famous journals, and medical professionals from France, Germany, Japan, China, Australia, and many other countries are visiting for Seoul National University Hospital to learn this technique.

Seoul National University Hospital's artificial heart valve wins regulators’ approval

SNUH has received sales approval from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for its pulmonary artery artificial heart valve.
The SNUH has been researching the device along with TaeWoong Medical since 2014.

The research team, led by Professors Kim Ki-bum, Kim Yong-jin and Im Heung-gook at the hospital, began the development of artificial heart valves using pig and bovine adrenal glands with the support from the long-term biosimilar project team funded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The team has also developed a stent that does not require patients to undergo an open chest surgery.
They completed animal research and conducted a clinical trial by transplanting the artificial heart valve on 10 patients and followed up on them for six months to prove the device’s effectiveness and safety in 2016.
As a result, the patient did not require any immunosuppressant as the valve showed almost no immune rejection, which is the biggest problem of xenotransplantation.
There are currently inquiries about the commercialization of the product not only from Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong but Europe,” the hospital said. “The research team will meet with 11 pediatric cardiac centers in six European countries and will begin clinical trials early next year.”
The heart has four valves that control blood circulation. The most common valve disease is valve stenosis of the aorta. However, TAVI, an aorta artificial heart valve, developed by advanced countries such as the U.S. has already secured most of the market share.
The hospital expects to have similar benefits, as the pulmonary artery artificial heart valve developed by SNUH research team is the first commercialized product of its kind in the world. Until now, Korea, the United States and China have been fiercely competing to develop the product.
Also, similar products being developed in foreign countries are expensive with prices ranging from 30 million to 40 million won ($26,000-35,000). Patients also have to undergo an open chest surgery during their first operation and replace the valve every 10 years.
The valve and stent developed by SNUH do not require open chest surgery and has a firm stent that can match the size of the patient’s pulmonary artery. The hospital expects that such benefits can lower the financial burden on patients.
Additional clinical trials are underway at several hospitals in Korea,” Professor Kim Ki-bum said. “If the hospital manages to receive a European CE certification after clinical trials in Europe, it will contribute to the improvement of patient's quality of life and globalization of Korean medical technology.”

Seoul National University Hospital have developed a new telescopic rod for osteogenesis deficiency treatment

Seoul National University Researchers have developed a new dual interlocking telescopic rod that is more effective in treating osteogenesis deficiency while reducing complications compared to the existing products.
Meaning of steogenesis Deficiency.
Steogenesis deficiency is a hereditary disease that varies according to the severity of the patient. It can cause multiple fractures in various parts of the body throughout the patients’ life and can make it difficult for them to walk due to deformation.

To treat such symptoms, doctors use an intramedullary rod. For children, however, who are still in the growing stage, the treatment can become a problem as their bones grow to pass the rod, which in turn leads to fractures in such areas.
A team, led by Professors Cho Tae-joon and Shin Chang-ho of the department of child orthopedics at the hospital, developed a telescopic rod that grows along with the growth of the bone. However, even with the use of a telescopic rod, complications such as bone remodeling still occurred.
To help overcome this problem, the researchers developed a dual interlocking telescopic rod that can fasten the bone. Even if the bone grows, the pins planted to hold the bone prevents it from growing in the wrong direction.
This newly developed rod is superior or similar to other devices in all aspects, including the maintenance period of the device, the surgery time, and length of the device as well as reducing complications such as bone remodeling, the hospital said.
“The new fixation device is expected to help children more effectively with fewer complications,” Professor Shin said.
